Kuan-Zhai Alley is one of Chengdu’s largest surviving ancient streets from the Qing Dynasty, consisting of three parallel historic streets: Kuan Alley, Zhai Alley, and Jing Alley. Kuan-Zhai Alley is Chengdu’s most photogenic historic street. The West Sichuan residential style, with its blue-gray bricks and dark-gray tiles, makes for stunning photos. But remember: just take photos and check in here; head to neighboring Kuixinglou Street for dining and shopping.

Prices at restaurants and shops inside Kuanzhai Alley are 1.5–2 times higher than outside. It’s a 5-minute walk to the neighboring Kuixinglou Street—a food street packed with locals, where food is both affordable and delicious.

Drawn in by the atmosphere of the historic street, I ended up spending money right there.
Consequences: It’s both expensive and inauthentic. It’s only a 5-minute walk along Kuixinglou Street—a world of difference.
