🏛️ What It Is
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the world’s most important giant panda conservation and research institution, and it is the only place on Earth where you can see dozens of giant pandas (including cubs) at the same time. Spanning 100 hectares, the base simulates the giant pandas’ natural habitat.The main highlights are the Moon Nursery (for newborn cubs) and the Sun Nursery (home to the internet-famous pandas “Hua Hua” and “Ye”). Pandas are most active between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m.
✨ Why Visit
Nowhere else in the world can you see so many giant pandas in one place—newborn pink cubs, baby pandas just a few months old, and adult giant pandas eating bamboo and playing. This is Chengdu’s most unique experience.
Tips for Visitors
Rush in as soon as the gates open—don’t wait
Pandas are active in the morning and sleep at noon. Arrive at the entrance before 8:00 a.m. to line up, and head straight to the Moon Nursery and Sun Nursery as soon as the gates open.
Enter through the West Gate and tour in the opposite direction
Enter through the West Gate → Go to the Moon Nursery first → then the Sun Nursery → followed by the other exhibits. This way, there will be half as many people.
The sightseeing bus isn’t necessarily worth it
The sightseeing bus costs 30 yuan, but the line can be over half an hour long; walking actually gives you more flexibility. The park isn’t that big.
Common Mistakes
❌ Arrive at noon
We didn’t arrive at the Panda Base until after 10:00 a.m.
Consequence: All the pandas were sleeping, so all you could see were motionless “panda balls.”

Best Time to Visit
Rush in as soon as the park opens between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. Pandas are most active from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. (eating and playing); after noon, they’re all asleep. Avoid weekends and holidays. Online booking required — general visitors cannot buy tickets on-site.
