🏛️ What It Is

In Chengdu’s century-old teahouses, the delicate aroma of gaiwan tea still lingers on your lips and between your teeth as the Sichuan Opera face-changing performance begins on stage—red, blue, and white faces shifting in the blink of an eye. Fire-breathing, rolling lanterns, and shadow puppetry take turns captivating the audience. This is the essence of Chengdu’s “bashi” lifestyle: a pot of tea, a performance, and an entire afternoon. The face-changing performances at He Ming Tea House (inside People’s Park), Yuelai Tea Garden (Zongfu Road), and Chen Mapo Sichuan Restaurant each have their own unique charm.

✨ Why Visit

Face-changing is the soul of Sichuan Opera, and watching it while sipping gaiwan tea in a teahouse is the most authentic Chengdu experience. In a single evening, you can experience both Chengdu’s “slow” pace (tea culture) and its “fast” pace (the speed of face-changing).

Tips for Visitors

He Ming Tea House is located inside People’s Park

A century-old teahouse; gaiwan tea costs 15–30 yuan. Ear cleaning costs 30 yuan. Visiting during the day offers the most authentic taste of Chengdu’s local life.

The evening face-changing performances are the best

Shufeng Yayun (Qintai Road, 120–260 yuan) and Jinjiang Theater (68–128 yuan) are the best places to see authentic Sichuan Opera face-changing.

Common Mistakes

Only attend the performances in the Wide and Narrow Lanes

Some of the performances in the Wide and Narrow Lanes are simplified versions aimed at tourists.

Consequence: Don’t just take a 15-minute quick tour. Go to Shufeng Yayun or Jinjiang Theater to watch a 1.5-hour authentic performance.
