Shawls sell for 50 yuan at the entrance to the Old Town, but just a few steps inside, they’re 15 yuan. For silverware, look for the “999” hallmark.

Once you enter the ancient city gate, the shopping begins.
Consequence: Prices are highest at the city gate. Walk a few steps inside, and prices drop by more than half.
