The Bund is Shanghai’s most iconic landmark, a 1.5-kilometer-long waterfront promenade stretching along the west bank of the Huangpu River. On one side stand 52 century-old European-style buildings in diverse architectural styles (the “Architectural Exposition of the Nations”); on the other lies the skyline of Lujiazui’s skyscrapers.

Shanghai’s most iconic scene—colonial-era architectural heritage on one side, futuristic skyscrapers on the other. Arrive in the late afternoon to watch the sunset and wait for the lights to come on.
Tips for Visitors
Take the Dongjin Line ferry (2 yuan) instead of a sightseeing cruise
Take the Dongjin Line ferry from the Jinling East Road ferry terminal on the Bund to Lujiazui—it’s only 2 yuan, a much better deal than the 100-yuan sightseeing cruise.
Under no circumstances should you visit the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel
The 50-yuan admission fee is just for a ride in a small car through a tunnel of lights—you won’t see a thing. It’s Shanghai’s most notorious “rip-off attraction.”
