🏛️ Attraction Overview

Faxi Temple (Shangtianzhu Faxi Lecture Temple) is the most effective temple in Hangzhou for seeking romantic matches and is also the top-trending Hangzhou temple on Xiaohongshu. Built during the Tianfu era of the Later Jin dynasty in the Five Dynasties period, it has a history of over a thousand years. With its yellow walls and black tiles, a 500-year-old magnolia tree, and the vantage point at Yuantong Hall overlooking the surrounding mountains, every corner is a photographer’s paradise. The yellow wall bearing the inscription “Do Not Seek Outside” is Hangzhou’s most popular temple photo spot. It’s just a 10-minute ride on the sightseeing bus from Lingyin Temple.

✨ Why It’s Worth a Visit

If Lingyin Temple is the “main hall” of Hangzhou’s temples, then Faxi Temple is the “internet sensation.” With its picturesque setting of yellow walls and ancient magnolias, its reputation for granting wishes for romance, and the mountain views from Yuantong Hall—it’s the favorite temple among Hangzhou’s young people. It’s very close to Lingyin Temple, so you can visit both while you’re out and about.

Practical Tips

Take the sightseeing bus from Lingyin Temple

Take the sightseeing bus at the entrance to Lingyin Temple for 10 yuan per person; it’s a 10-minute direct ride to Faxi Temple. It’s faster than taking a taxi and saves you the trouble of finding your way.

The Yellow Wall is on the right as you enter

The yellow wall with the inscription “Do Not Seek Outside” is the most popular photo spot. The 500-year-old magnolia tree is at its most beautiful when it blooms in March.

Buy the “Eighteen Seeds” inside the temple

The Buddhist relics shop is inside the temple—don’t buy anything at the entrance. As with other temples, we only recommend purchasing from official channels within the temple grounds.

Common Mistakes

Head over for a vegetarian meal

I saw an old travel guide that mentioned some delicious vegetarian meals.

Consequences: Faxi Temple will no longer serve vegetarian meals starting in 2025—don’t make the trip for nothing. Be sure to eat elsewhere first before coming here.
