🏛️ Attraction Overview

West Lake is the soul of Hangzhou and China’s most picturesque lake. Covering 6.5 square kilometers and surrounded by mountains on three sides, the lake is divided into distinct scenic areas by the Su Causeway and Bai Causeway. The Ten Scenic Spots of West Lake—such as “Remnants of Snow on the Broken Bridge,” “Sunset over Leifeng Pagoda,” and “Three Pools Reflecting the Moon”—each embody a thousand years of poetry and legend.

✨ Why It’s Worth a Visit

West Lake is China’s most iconic example of the fusion of nature and culture. Whether strolling or cycling around the lake, every turn reveals a different ink-wash painting. The best time to visit is between 6 and 7 a.m., when crowds are at their thinnest and the light is at its best.

Practical Tips

Take the 5-yuan bus-boat tour of West Lake

The West Lake public ferry, at 5 yuan per person, connects all major piers and offers much better value than the 100-yuan sightseeing boats.

Shared bikes are prohibited on Su Causeway and Bai Causeway

Shared bikes are not allowed on Su Causeway and Bai Causeway; violators will be fined. Walk or take the public ferry.

Common Mistakes

Arrived at West Lake at noon

Head to West Lake at lunchtime when tour groups are swarming the area.

Consequences: It’s packed with people—it doesn’t feel like “Paradise on Earth” at all. Go between 6 and 7 a.m.
