Yuyuan Garden is Shanghai’s most famous classical garden, built in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty, with a history spanning more than 400 years. The Nine-Turn Bridge and the Lake-Center Pavilion are its iconic landmarks. The adjacent Yuyuan Shopping Mall and City God Temple are great places to sample Shanghai street food.

The takeout line on the first floor has a wait of over an hour—head straight to the second-floor dining area instead; crab roe xiaolongbao are about 45 yuan per steamer basket.

Best Time to Visit

Best visited in spring and fall. There’s a grand lantern festival during the Spring Festival. It’s less crowded on weekday mornings.
