Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is China’s first national forest park and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. More than 3,000 quartz sandstone peaks and pillars rise from the canyons, creating a scene that resembles a fairyland when shrouded in mist. The “Hallelujah Mountain” from *Avatar*—the Qiankun Pillar—is located right here. The Bailong Elevator (326 meters, the world’s highest outdoor elevator) offers a unique way to enter the scenic area.
✨ Why It’s Worth a Visit
No place on Earth is like Zhangjiajie. Those stone pillars rising straight from the canyon floor to the sky will make you doubt your own eyes. Be sure to wait for the sea of clouds—it’s a completely different world with and without them.
Practical Tips
Plan for at least 2 days
The park is very large. You won’t be able to see all the main attractions in a single day. We recommend spending 2–3 days there.
Don’t be disappointed on rainy days
Zhangjiajie’s sea of clouds only appears after it rains—and that’s actually when it’s most spectacular.
Watch out for monkeys
There are many wild macaques inside the park; do not reach out to feed them, and do not carry plastic bags (the monkeys will snatch them).
Common Mistakes
❌ Only one day scheduled
I thought I could see everything in a day.
Consequences: Could only do a quick tour of one or two spots. The park is really huge.
