Xiaohe Zhijie is Hangzhou’s most charming arts and culture district, embodying the essence of a Jiangnan water town, located along the Grand Canal.Residences from the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican era, with white walls and black-tiled roofs, line the river. Along the bluestone-paved road, you’ll find independent teahouses, handmade leather goods shops, independent bookstores, and small taverns. Unlike the commercial hustle and bustle of Hefang Street, this area exudes the down-to-earth charm of life along the canal. As evening falls, sightseeing boats glide slowly along the canal while lights gradually come on along both banks—making this one of Hangzhou’s most soothing spots.

If West Lake is Hangzhou’s facade, Xiaohe Zhijie is its soul. There are no tour groups here—just locals walking their dogs, artsy young people sipping coffee, and cargo boats on the canal.
